Each of the following pairs of diagrams shows a first and second step that could be used to represent a multiplication problem. For each pair, write a multiplication problem and its solution.

  1. Two equal sized rectangles. Left rectangle is divided into 3 equal vertical sections, with left 2 sections shaded light grey. Right rectangle is divided into 2 rows of 3 rectangles, with the 2 top left rectangles shaded dark grey, and 2 bottom left rectangles shaded light grey.

What portion does the first figure represent? The second figure further divides the portion from the first figure.
Into how many pieces does it divide the original portion?

What is the solution to this multiplication problem?

  2. This diagram is 2 sets of 6 circles. The first set has 5 out of the 6 circles fully shaded. The second set of 6 circles are each divided into 4 equal sections. 5 out of the 6 circles are shaded in all 4 sections. 1 section out of each of the 5 circles is shaded darker than the others.

This problem is very similar to part (a). What portion of the circles are darkened in the first figure?
Into how many pieces are the circles divided in the second figure?
